Downtown Kalamazoo Date Night
I think it's safe to say that in our current world, finding a date night idea can be tough! A lot of places are still pretty locked down, most restaurants and places that we would traditionally go for a date night are not open. And we can only count pizza and a Netflix movie on the couch a date so many times, am I right?!
This idea specifically shown in the photos is for a married couple, however, I think it really could apply to any couple, married or not!
Here's the idea...
Recreate one of your favorite days!
How The Idea Came To Be
Originally I had reached out to Joanna because she had mentioned she still had her wedding dress and I thought snowy dress pictures would be a blast!
Joanna being the creative spirit she is, saw the photo opportunity as a way to have her and her husband put on their almost exact wedding attire and make a little date night. When she presented the idea of having her husband, Kyle, join us, I was ecstatic! I'm pretty sure my response to her idea was something along the lines of, "Oh heck yes!", with all the heart-eyed emojis. If you follow along with us on social media you already know I'm a huge fan of emojis, or as I like to call them, "stickers".
We met downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan, and walked to a parking garage so that we could see the cityscape in the background.
The snow was a mixture of light flurries and rain, something else I've got a little Riki-ism for, "snain". Although it was super chilly and snaining, they braved the elements.
Joanna and Kyle were married on July 6th, 2019 at Solitude Links Golf Course and Banquet Center.
Making this recreation a great way to kind of celebrate their day differently.
Whereas in these photos we had the winter aspects, their wedding day was a gorgeous sunny day in July.
After wrapping up photos, warm coffee sounded like perfection. With everything still closed, Joanna and Kyle invited me to their home where they basically have their own cozy coffee shop, complete with an espresso machine, different coffee bean and flavored syrup options! There they shared more of their love story with me, I met their dogs and one of their cats and had amazing caffè. In other words, I was in Heaven.
It wasn't until after I learned more of their wedding day, honeymoon, and proposal story that the blog idea came to me!
Maybe you're thinking that this still doesn't seem to apply to non-married couples. Well, let's again use Joanna and Kyle as inspiration! Say they wanted to do a date night, not with wedding attire, they could have done a version of their proposal/anniversary night! Here's how,
Every anniversary this lovely couple would go to the same Restaurant that they had their first-ever date at, The Rochester Chop House.
This is also the very same place that Kyle proposed to Joanna.
We know everything is closed(***UPDATE! As of now things are slowly opening up! We still think this is a fun idea though. :)***), so they couldn't exactly go to the restaurant but after they told me of their foodie natures, something tells me they could play restaurant in their own kitchen!
STEP 1: Be Chef's, find your favorite restaurant's menu online, and attempt to create the entrees and desserts you like best from there! Even if you aren't foodies like Joanna and Kyle, this could still be super fun! Worst case, have a frozen pizza on stand by!
STEP 2: This is a two-part step! Go to your closet and wear something you could wear to your restaurant. Show yourself some self-love, wear what makes you feel confident! You're going on a date here! Part two, create some ambiance. Light some candles, put on some tunes, set out flowers, or throw on a checkered table cloth if you're leaning into the restaurant's style. Just have fun with it!
Now, Kyle is a planner. He curated a magical evening for their proposal night, even purchasing wine glasses from The Rochester Chop House so that they could have toasts on their future anniversaries using the same glasses. (Is that not SO adorable?!) They also always keep the same type of bottle of wine in the house that they had that night, Beran Zinfandel 2013.
STEP 3: CHEERS! This can be whatever drink you want! Get wild, add straws, put it in a fun cup! Then celebrate all the monumental, silly, romantic, or even just everyday moments you two have shared. Your relationship is special, even the most mundane times you spend together are worth celebrating.
STEP 4: Enjoy your meal, each other's company, listen to music, dance in your kitchen/living room/dining room.
STEP 5: Have it photographed! Hire a photographer, or even just use your phone and set up the self-timer! If your phone doesn't have the self-timer feature, you could always video yourselves in cute poses and then screenshot what you like, or there are apps you can download to get a timer. :)
Let's stay in touch!
